Brasília from the Beginning, Fifty Years Ago
Lecture in English by Dr Styliane Philippou
The Hellenic Centre, London, UK
Monday 26 April 2010, 7.15pm
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary from the inauguration of Brazil's modern capital, Styliane Philippou will give a lecture on the making of Brasília, the utopias embodied in Lúcio Costa's Modernist masterplan, and Oscar Niemeyer's ensemble of monumental civic buildings, which shaped the skyline of the postcolonial Brazilian city par excellence, and offered him the opportunity to enter into a dialogue with the landmarks of architectural history. Dr Styliane Philippou is an architect and architectural historian, and author of Oscar Niemeyer: Curves of Irreverence, published by Yale University Press in 2008.
