Lecture.The contemporary cityscape and antiquities
History through the lens of the present.Remembrance and Pathos (January 10, 2011)
Future prospects remain inextricably bound up with the past on both an individual and collective level. As we examine our past in terms of the questions new and old and issues current and chronic which the present requires us to reframe and discuss anew, people, events and interpretations shed light on the past from unexpected viewpoints, making our relationship with History more creative and alive.
The contemporary cityscape and antiquities: A strained relationship
We live in a city peppered with archaeological sites of immense aesthetic and symbolic importance. But how at ease do we feel in their company? Are these sites integrated into the fabric of our cities and into our everyday urban lives? And what can how we coexist alongside the material remains of the ancient past tell us about our relationship with History?
