Workshop at the Benaki Museum on " The artificial lighting from antiquity to the present ". (10 March 2012)
In this interdisciplinary seminar historians, art historians, archaeologists, folklorists, electrical and mechanical engineers will present the evolution of the artificial lighting from the antiquity to the present. Sometimes they will refer to excavations, historical evidences and surviving objects and sometimes to contemporary photometric analysis.
Passing from the late Roman era to the Middle Ages, will focus on various means of how religious and cultural groups in the eastern Mediterranean chose to illuminate their religious and secular buildings. At the same time, they will also consider the symbolic significant of light, especially the flame, as recorded in religious beliefs and survives in modern societies.
Going to the twentieth century, they will attempt to explore the reasons for the initial restricted distribution of electric lighting in Greece and will highlight the social differences that this caused. Finally, reaching the present, researchers electrician engineers will propose innovative ways of lighting archaeological sites, museums and art exhibits by using the most advanced lighting systems.
