“Architecture and the city in SE Europe”
The transformation of public space- an action by the architectural schools. (until 26 February 2012)
Today's image of city and the new social and financial circumstances make thoughts about human and the city, whereas the role in architecture in that. Occasioned by this subject, the Architecture School in Thessaloniki take the initiative to organize an exhibition and other events with the subject of the relation between architecture and the city, especially in Southeast Europe. The exhibition is in collaboration with Goethe Institut of Thessaloniki, with the other Goethe institutes in Southeast Europe, but also with five museums in the town (Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Museum of Byzantine Culture, State Museum of Contemporary Art and Teloglion Foundation of Art Auth)
The exhibition with the title "Architecture and the city in SE Europe", which is realized until February 26th, will contain projects from the architecture schools in SE Europe, with basic research field in public space, city and the transformation of them today with an architectural look. Simultaneously, the aim of the exhibition is to emphasize and make the beginning of a new discussion about public space and to create a wide scope for the future. With the event, which contains not only the exhibition, but also visits, lectures and other events, the architecture schools will attempt to make a discussion with society about how the architecture can create public space, in order to emphasize the role of university.
In the exhibition diplomatic projects and special works from the architecture schools, are presented and renegotiate design strategies about sustainable architecture and evolution, about the making of contemporary public space in urban and suburban environment. Very important to mention is the projects which represent the architecture schools, but also how the universities understand public space in city. National Technical University in Athens attempts to comprehend and pose all the problematic about how architectural interventions can contribute in a positive way under contemporary circumstances. The architecture school in Crete, through a video of undergraduate projects, attempt to decode the various and of different nature factors which influence the city space's transformation. From the Architecture School in Patra, projects from large to very small scale, try to renegotiate the relation of architecture to landscape and time, while the Democritus University of Thrace, with the use of contemporary and not only techniques, ideas, structures and relations, in order to invent a new "vocabulary" of public space's interpretation.
