Mies van der Rohe - Visions of Space (Μέρος 1-7)

 

Mies van der Rohe\'s, Barcelona Pavilion (German Pavilion in Barcelona) was constructed as a temporary building for the International Exposition in Barcelona of 1929. Though temporary, it was still made of permanent materials - steel, glass, marble, and travertine. After the closure of the Exhibition, the Pavilion was disassembled in 1930. It is rebuilt on its original site in 1986.

The Farnsworth House is one of the most significant of Mies van der Rohes works. The house embodies a certain aesthetic culmination in Rohes' experiment with this building type. Also is perhaps the fullest expression of modernist ideals that had begun in Europe, but which were consummated in Plano, Illinois.

Mies van der Rohes' considered the main materials that he used, glass, steel, concrete, as the materials of the 20th century. His motto "Less Is More" is distinguished, both in his architecture such as in his life.

Mies van der Rohe's contribution in the formation of the image of American cities during the 50's with the development of skyscrapers was crucial.

Mies van der Rohe's copies were a lot and sometimes bad. "You cannot invent a new architecture every Monday morning" as the architect said. The tribute to Mies ends with the National Gallery of Berlin, that "it is not the museum without walls but full walls without museum".
