Beach House – I
This residence, built in Japan, offers an extraordinary view to the ocean, and combines the Japanese minimalism with a more contemporary design. (Yamamori Architects)
The key issues for this project, were how to integrate to the design of the building, the natural elements, such as the ocean, the environment, the sky and the wind. This site is located in an isolated bay with a beautiful view to the ocean, with fishing boats coming and going. In this contradictory scenery, the client required a house to visit occasionally. Between the site and the ocean there is a small road. Even though it is not accessible a lot by vehicles, it was a factor in the design process that had to be considered.
The different height level between the ground, and the interior spaces of the building are the details that make this house extraordinary. The floor of the house is in a higher level from the physical ground, so as to create the impression of floating. This level differentiation is important to retain the view to the ocean, that is often blocked by the high oceanic tides of this area. The wing-like eave introduces an aerodynamic element appropriate in this high-wind area. It gives a lightness to the building and it frames the view according to the Japanese tradition of "borrowed scenery".
In section, this house consists of four levels. It is mostly a single volume of different floor levels at the inside and each level is connected to each other with mild stairs. The view is different from every level since the scenery at the outside changes. These contrasts generate a dynamic interior space. This house is like a viewing device to look at the ocean. There is continuity between the interior and the exterior, that are blending into this natural coastal environment with harmony.
The final building achieves the aim of the architect to create a minimal house with abstract spiritual elements, calm and balanced.
