Habitat, the sustainable home
Student architectural competition for the design of residence to eliminate poverty housing problem. (registration until 15 February)
ACSA (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture) has recently announced the student architectural competition for 2011-2012 "The Sustainable Home: Habitat for Humanity". The competition aims to encourage new architects to face the problem of housing for the poor with the design of a simple, affordable house, which will offer good living conditions.
All the students or young architects (who have been graduated since 5 years) from school members of ACSA. The participants are encouraged to work in teams on the project and it is necessary to work under the direction of a faculty sponsor.
The idea of the competition is the design of a modular, 3-bedroom housing, which will not be over 1,070 square meters. The project focuses mainly on two areas: the inclusion of a passive solar energy system which has to be affordable and the design of a flexible housing not only with the help of exterior but also interior components. The residence will be designed in relation to the climate of the participants' location. That's why 4 climate zones have been created (East, West, South, Midwest), in order to respond to realistic conditions.
Basic characteristics of the solutions which will be awarded are the elements of creativity and invention for a sustainable architecture in multiple scales in combination with affordable ideas which respond to reality. The winners will be announced in the official website of the competition and will be also given cash prizes.
