Our design thesis is a proposal for the creation of a geological museum and a small research unit as well as a discovery walkway along the landscape.
The site we've analyzed is the volcanic island of Milos and more specifically the area of Sarakiniko, which is often characterized as a lunar landscape, due to its magnificent white rock formations.
The project consists of 3 subterranean parallel units ,museum, cafeteria and a
research unit accordingly, that literally dig into the fascinating geological history, leaving at the same time the outstanding landscape undisturbed. They are located in a natural dip in the landscape and on the extension of the axis of three existing tunnels of an abandoned quarry at the site. Each one of the three units includes a tunnel like space which constitutes the main circulation axis, and channels visitors through spaces and voids of varying intensity .
We used the light as our main designing tool as it determines the shape of the exhibition rooms as well as the way the visitor moves through them.
The museum space is characterized by spatial fluidity and a variety of moods provoking different feelings in the visitor, such as the feelings of claustrophobia and immersion, or even the feeling of 'floating' in a space with what seem to be 'undefined limits'. It's about using all your senses. The museum aims to be experienced by the visitor as a promenade, with varying light intensities. From dark, he is gradually led back to the light, causing him to glare, offering him the view of the landscape opening up before him and bringing him back to what is 'real'.
The open air promenade is scattered and sculpted on the landscape with the aim to encourage the visitor to wander in order to discover it. On specific parts of the promenade we recommended the use of vertical elements, made of corten steel, which help to guide and orientate the visitor as well as to measure oneself against the indeterminacy of the land.
